An Untidy cabling cabinet is often considered as the bane of the IT departments lives – it’s a health & safety hazard, it can also be confusing, time consuming and incredibly frustrating when you’re trying to make updates to the network and you can’t even see where to start.
We came across just such a situation as we took over the IT support at one of our customer sites. As you can see their network cabling cabinet was in dire need of some TLC.
Here’s what the Practice Manager had to say about our work – “Your Datasharp engineer worked wonders – I am so happy :-)”
Here’s how our engineer improved their cabinet in 4 easy, logical steps:
-
Add a splash of colour
The first step was to colour code each of the cables to ensure the customer could easily identify which cables related to voice, data etc.
-
Neaten & tidy
Once we could see what we were dealing with we added dump trays to neaten the cables and keep them securely in place.
-
Create a bit of order
We then clearly labelled all switches & routers and mounted them on secure brackets, again so that everything was easily identifiable.
-
Keep on working
Finally, we added a battery back-up and a rack mountable distribution unit for all routers, hubs etc so that in the event of a power failure everything remains operational.
By taking the time to consider how this cabinet should be set up, we’ve quickly improved this customers’ business continuity & efficiency and they’re more health & safety compliant too.
With some extra training and IT support they’re now able to maintain more of the network themselves which makes their IT more cost effective too.
Sometimes, it’s the little things that make a difference.
